valkyrieza: (Firefly - you are not quiet right)
I have come across this in the Computer Business Review magazine. This is possibly one of the best editorial columns I have read in this magazine.

World Wide Worx recently released a survey that show that companies that have sold WiFi hotspot access at coffee shops and the like for horrendous amounts of money, are getting the finger from customers.

What can one say except, it’s about time. These WiFi sellers made an absolute killing on their service, although my experience tells me calling it a service is an exaggeration.

We can all understand a business taking advantage of a pathetic political reality and milking its market while providing horrendous service, like Telkom, but how do business leaders stay in business when they destroy their market. Even the much maligned, much hated Telkom is trying to change, they always say thank you before ignoring you these days.

One of the chapters will start like this:

" You know the common legend of walking in a crowded place when you suddenly stumble and kept from falling by strong arms of a good-looking stranger? This is then recounted as the tale on how you met your future souldmate? Well, that never happens. I should know, I tried.

I mean at most that one can achieve is your brand new expensive top becomes smudged with some sort of a raspberry-vanilla-hazelnut ice-cream concoction that never washes off and the tiny mostrosity with a lisp will loudly demand another portion as his had been ruined by the big bad villain, meaning you. So instead of apologising for her spawn's behaiviour, the obese hag will send you a look venomous enough to classify as a weapon of mass destruction and walk off with a huff dragging the little monster by his sticky hand.

That of course makes you wonder on why you embarked on trying to meet any handsome strangers at all if the end result will leave you looking like Barney the purple Dinosaur, whilst you try not to lose sight of the mutants who by age 5 have the agility of Spiderman on speed. Naturally, looking at thinner, younger inspiration of Sports Illustrated model will put you in the mood to scare off Grendel's mother. So why do we still pursue the hope of meeting good looking strangers in futile attempt to fulfill the illusion portrayed on the Mills and Boon's covers?"

Scientists in hybrid embryos plea
By Pallab Ghosh
Science correspondent, BBC News

Leading scientists have urged peers not to block the use of human-animal hybrid embryos for research.

Amendments to the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Bill would restrict the use of such embryos, which contain a small amount of animal DNA.

But the scientists say they are vital to the development of new treatments.

The appeal comes from the Medical Research Council, the Royal Society, the Wellcome Trust and the Academy of Medical Sciences.

Contentious proposals

The government's bill attempts to update the current rules on the use of embryos for research in light of recent scientific advances.

One of the most contentious proposals is to enable researchers to create animal-human hybrids for research purposes - a move that some in the House of Lords are keen to overturn.

I think the concept of human-animal embryos is making me extremely uncomfortable. I keep thinking of  the High Evolutionary villain from Marvel Comics.

Traffic

Spotted in traffic on the way to work this morning.  The vehicle with a number plate of "Tsabus GP". I have no clue what it means.

This was taken on the way to work along one of the busiest street in the morning traffic in Johannesburg, Jan Smuts. Of course, there maybe a possibility they'll rename the street, but I would rather they take care of other obstructions first.

I still have no idea why does one need to overturn the Bus stop, but it has been there for several days.
