I was perusing through IMDB today and was very surprised to find that Philippa Gregory's novel "The other Boleyn Girl" is being filmed and will be out in the beginning of March next year.  Now, I am filled with excitment as it stars one of my favourite actresses, Natalie Portman as the enigmatic and ambitious Anne Boleyn and the so talented Eric Bana as King Henry. In sharp contrast to Portman's dark beauty is Scarlett Johansson. I can already see the rolling of the yes of most of my male friends, but having read the books, I feel it recreates the times and life of Henry's court as accurately as it can.

Here is one of the released images from the movie.

In other news, to my fellow fantasy novel enthusiasts, I'd like to recommend the novel "Winterbirth" is a breath of fresh air. It is not because it is breaking the rules of the genre with it's brilliance, even though it is highly enjoyable and readable. The premise is unusual and some stereotypes fall away to make for some new interesting, likeable and most of all, realistic characters. Otherwise, it is a solid book of epic fantasy complete with castles, old grudges, religious fanaticism, greedy southern merchants, other races and long-forgotten secrets. I suppose this what makes it so appealing at the end. There is no sugary sweetness of the likes of David Eddings, neither it strives to be so different from the others as to lose itself entirely from the fantasy roots and one does not need to know the world in order to submerge oneself in it, unlike say Raymond E. Feist's Midkemia.
